Ten Tips For Getting a Date on Valentine's Day

Love it (for the excitement) or hate it (for the pressure), Valentine's Day is coming soon. I used to hate it, because I always seemed to find myself single in February. It took me a while to realize that Valentine's Day is an opportunity. Single people everywhere suddenly get up and be more proactive about meeting that special someone. That means that your chances of landing a date with them are never better than right now.

Here then, are ten tips to make your Valentine's Day one to remember.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #1: Look for events

There are a lot of events for singles right now, either directly or indirectly related to Valentine's Day. The direct ones could be Valentine's Day themed parties or speed dating events. Indirect ones could be a book reading that's scheduled near February 14th, and will attract singles who are eager (and open) to meeting people. The name of the game is visibility: don't stay at home and feel sorry for yourself - get out there and look for events where things will happen.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #2: Find a buddy

Is Valentine's Day getting you stressed? Need a bit of moral support? Get a buddy. That person can be either single or in a relationship; it doesn't matter. What does matter is that your buddy will be there to motivate you to get out when you're tempted to stay at home, that they'll listen to you when you're getting down or need to vent, and that they'll provide advice when you need it. While your buddy will be there to help you on an active basis, they also serve another, more passive purpose: the mere fact that they're aware of your Valentine's Day goals will help you simply because you won't want to let them down. Think about it: if no one knows what your goals are, then it's easy for you to not follow up on them. But when you communicate your goals to a buddy, then it's much harder to give up, because you know that someone cares about how you're doing. Get a buddy, and get going.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #3: Be chivalrous (ladies too!)

Gentlemen (and ladies), remember that when you're talking to a potential date in the days leading up to February 14th, you must be chivalrous. While I feel that chivalry is something we should all do 365 days a year, it's especially important for Valentine's Day. So be especially nice, polite, and thoughtful over the next two weeks. When you open the door for that cute person, offer them a smile and an "After you!". If an attractive person seems to be deliberating over what kind of coffee to buy at the local coffee shop, offer a few thoughtful suggestions (and start up a great conversation). These small gestures are the ones that will really stick in the mind of your potential soul mate, and make a great first impression.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #4: Decide right now

It's time to decide. It's time to decide what you're going to do on February 14th. You have two choices: either you're going to go on a date with someone you're going to meet in the next few days, or you're going to go to an event on Valentine's day where you'll have the opportunity to meet people. Either way, commit to doing something on February 14th that will get you one step closer to your soul mate. As with any thing in the dating landscape, if you leave things wishy-washy, they won't get done.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #5: Think of one great thing you've done lately

There are only a few days to go before Valentine's, and you have to be ready for the moment when you'll run into that potential date. You have to woo them with your charm right away. The best way to do that is to just be yourself, but it helps if you have a little something you can use to intrigue them and get them curious about you. Curiosity is great, and makes getting a date that much easier. So what, you may ask, is that little something that will get them interested? It's a great thing you've done lately. "Great" can be anything - big or small - as long as you're proud of it. It can be the fact that you've accomplished a new year's resolution, finally tried that restaurant you've always wanted to go to, or that you've done something productive at work. The point is not to having something impressive to show off, but rather, to show your potential date that you're proud of something you've done. People are attracted to happy, confident people, and by showing someone that you're happy with something you've done lately, you'll project yourself in a very good light... and maybe even get that first date.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #6: Update your on-line profile

If you're a member of an on-line dating site, now is the time to spice your profile up with some Valentine's day related tidbits. Whether it be your headline or your profile text (or, ideally, both), let people know that you're ready, willing, and able to have a great time with a special someone on February 14th. You can keep things general ("Can't wait to have a romantic dinner with Mr./Ms. Charming!" or get more specific ("Ever sky-dived on Valentine's day? How about giving it a try with me?"). The important thing is to electrify your profile and get people excited about contacting you.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #7: Promise yourself you'll initiate

You're not going to get a date by sitting in front of the TV. You have to get out there and start talking to people, but that's not always easy. Intimidation often rears its ugly head, and you psyche yourself out and don't chat up that cute person you just saw. A way out of this is to set yourself initiation goals: decide to talk to at least one person a day-or two or three. Don't go home before you've talked to someone. But don't make it a big deal: you don't have to have a full-blown conversation. It could be a two minute talk, or even a thirty second exchange of words... the point it so make sure you do it. Remember: you only need one exchange to click in order to have a Valentine.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #8: Be open

You're not the only person looking for a Valentine's Day date. Other people are also looking, and some of those people are looking for someone exactly like you! So be open. Don't be picky. If someone has the courage to approach you about a date on February 14th, then give them a chance. This is a great time of the year to be adventurous and try new things. Say yes and see what Cupid has in store for you.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #9: Remember to be cool

Do you have a date for Valentine's Day? Still looking for one? No matter what the situation, be cool. Don't act stressed or put undue pressure on the situation: this will only make things more difficult. There's a lot of emotional baggage tied to Cupid's favorite day. Most of it is good-it's an excuse to be romantic!-but some it can be bad it you let it be. So chill out and make your date feel comfortable, or make prospective dates feel comfortable. It just makes February 14th that much more fun.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day - Tip #10: Have fun!

Have fun-period. If you found a date, then enjoy your evening to the fullest and enjoy your date to the fullest. If you didn't find a date, then pamper yourself alone or with friends. Dating is hard, so make the best of every situation and enjoy yourself. Happy Valentine's Day to everyone.
